Gregory "Greg" Mark Lindsey

Greg Lindsey clearly danced to a different drummer. For the last three and a half years of his life, Greg fought an arduous battle before finally succumbing to esophageal cancer.  But those of us who knew him best remember a lot of good times along with the challenging chapters of his life.

 

Greg was born on October 7, 1957, at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, the youngest of three children born to Roscoe and Maxin Lindsey.  On August 27, 2025, at the age of 67, Greg died at Research.

 

Greg graduated from Southwest High School in 1975, a bit past that school's prime, but it was still one of the better high schools in Kansas City, Missouri.

 

Greg was a good student, but even then, his favorite pastime was music.  He played in the Southwest band and was a talented pianist.  After high school, he played in a number of area bands, at restaurants, and at a number of other places like Worlds of Fun.

 

The summer before he graduated from Southwest, he attended a music festival in the Ozark Mountains in Northwest Arkansas.  The music was more "roots" (country, folk, bluegrass, and blues) than Woodstock had been five years earlier, but in a lot of ways it was the Midwest's answer, with overflow crowds, brilliant music, and camaraderie.

 

Greg had a blast at the festival and a year later enrolled at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.  He stayed in Fayetteville a year or two before heading home.  He continued classwork at UMKC and Avila University before earning a degree from DeVry University.

 

When Greg's father died in 1988, he became even closer to his mother, Maxine, and they became frequent companions for he next 32 years.  In 2020, she passed away, just 38 days shy of 100 years of age. When they couldn't see each other, they enjoyed regular phone conversations.

 

Greg's survivors include his sister Ann Flanders and her husband Dave of Fairway, KS; brother Ron Lindsey and his wife Kathy of Overland Park, KS.  Nieces and nephews include Lindsey (Ryan) Pirtle, Melanie (Pete) Kinser, Tom (Jenna) Lindsey, and Joanie (Jeff) Meyer.  He also leaves behind five great nieces.

 

Especially in his later years, Greg enjoyed spending time at his home of 34 years in Waldo, Missouri.  A lifelong cat lover, Greg is also survived by his eight-year-old feline friend Mirabele.

 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 6th, 2025, 2:00 pm at Westport Presbyterian Church, 201 Westport Rd., Kansas City, MO.
